History of the Pioneer-class

 

The USS Trailblazer is the second Pioneer-class starship to be built. The first, USS Pioneer, was designed to be a fast ship with sustainable high warp capability for long periods with the mission of traveling to the Delta Quadrant to rendezvous with the starship Voyager that had disappeared in the Badlands in the year 2371. This rescue vessel was being constructed at Utopia Planitia shipyards when the Vendoth attacked the Sol system in 2376. The ship was destroyed. In the aftermath of the Vendoth attack, construction began on the second Pioneer-class starship--USS Trailblazer. Shortly before the Trailblazer was completed, Voyager returned to Earth via a Borg transwarp conduit. With the return of Voyager, Trailblazer's primary mission was no longer needed.

 

Trailblazer was completed but remained at Utopia Planitia without a designated mission until the Harrell shipyards at Catulla and several other Federation, Klingon, and Romulan installations were mysteriously attacked. In early 2378, the USS Trailblazer, under the command of newly promoted Captain Melanie Leeson, was assigned the task to investigate the attacks and stop those responsible.

 

The USS Trailblazer proved to be a ship that is both fast and able to do well in a fight. Starfleet Command, based on the Trailblazer’s performance, authorized the construction of seven more Pioneer-class starships to be equipped for multi-purpose mission profiles. Due to the sustained high warp velocities of this class, some of the Pioneers will be designated and outfitted as diplomatic couriers, whereas others will be designated as long-range scouts/explorers or rescue vehicles.
