History of the Intrepid-class (Variant A)
The USS Providence
was the first variant Intrepid-class starship to be
built; however, two more have been constructed and launched into service
with three more planned. Upgrades from the standard Intrepid-class include
a prototype holographic cloaking device that allows the ship to hide inside a
3-dimensional image of an asteroid, comet, or another starship, The holographic
technology was designed for use to covertly study
pre-warp civilizations and as a stealth form of defense in potentially hostile
areas. A second prototype holocloak was installed in
the Providence’s successor, and Ericsson-class scout, but the
other two Intrepid-class variants have not included holographic cloaking
devices as of stardate 57327.
Like other Intrepid-class
starships, Variant A integrates bio-neural gel packs into the computer system.
Another upgrade for this variant is the warp nacelles, which are significantly
longer than the standard Intrepids, and the nacelle pylons remain
stationary instead of folding when the warp drive is engaged. The warp field
produced by the new nacelles increases time that the Intrepid variant can
sustain higher warp factors.
The U.S.S. Providence
showed promise as the prototype for the Intrepid variant; however, its
life had been cut short less than a year after it
launched when it made planetfall on a world that had an undetectable gaseous
element in its atmosphere that eroded the ship’s tritanium hull.
