History of the Ericsson-class
The USS Providence is the second Ericsson-class
starship to be built. Originally commissioned as the U.S.S. Marco Polo,
the ship was renamed to replace the Intrepid-class U.S.S. Providence after
its untimely destruction. The most noteworthy systems include a holographic
cloaking device, greater use and efficiency of holographic technology
throughout the main areas of the ship, multi-layered regenerating shields,
metaphasic shields, and a matter-to-antimatter (MAM) conversion generator to
increase the fuel supply for long-range missions.
The Ericsson-class
starships are designated as long-rang scouts that are equipped for long-term,
long-range missions. The types of missions that this class of starship usually
perform includes simple planetary surveys, mapping, first contact, and basic
scientific missions.
This class of starship houses a
crew complement of approximately 60 persons; however, the crew can be
supplemented by up to 40 holographic crew members including all bridge
stations, EMH (mark I and mark II), engineering stations, transporter
operators, and extra security personnel in all areas of the ship.
